Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
