A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
